“The sound is huge… jumping numbers…fanciful compositions… gorgeous lyrical invention, - Blues Revue
Born in Barcelona in 1973, Lluís Coloma is one of the most recognized and in-demand pianists in the European Blues scene. In 2008 he releases his fourth record entitled Boogie Portraits, an album of duets. In your stereo system, Lluis is in your left speaker and guests are heard in the right in all tracks except #1.
Lluis started classical piano studies at an early age. After hearing the sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis, Roosevelt Sykes and Alan Price he migrated from stuffy classical lessons to self-taught rock & roll eventually showing a remarkable ability for Blues and Boogie Woogie. And thus it all began.
Today Lluis is considered a specialist and garners accolades and awards such as “Best Catalan Musician 2003” and “Artista BluesCat 2006., When not recording and performing Lluís gives conferences and master classes on the history of Blues and Boogie Woogie piano and is one of the few pianists in Spain able to recreate the primitive styles of the genre. He is the artistic director of the Barcelona Blues Festival, organizes the Barcelona Blues Society’s Boogie Woogie Jubilee and is a mainstay on the European blues & piano festival circuit. See why on the above Youtube link.
From the beginning, Lluis has made a mark in Blues & Boogie Woogie penning his own compositions on the critically acclaimed releases REMEMBER (Omix Records 2002), BOOGIEOLOGY (Rosazul Discos 2005) and LONELY AVENUE (Swing Alley 2006).
In his new CD, BOOGIE PORTRAITS (Swing Alley 2008), Lluís records duets with Blues & Boogie Woogie piano greats Carl Sonny Leyland, Barrelhouse Chuck, Mitch Woods, Bob Seeley, Mark “Mr B” Braun, Frank Muschalle and others. Remember to set the balance of your hi-fi!
In 2007 Lluis played festivals here in the United States alongside David Maxwell, Mitch Woods, Bruce Katz, and Axel Zwingenberger. Naturally, he tours throughout Europe and occasionally afar such as Malaysia’s Miri Jazz Festival in ’06 & ’07. With Boogie Portraits, 2008 Lluis Coloma expands even farther.
